Pentagon Prop. Futsal Club

About Us

In September 2001, James Aquilina set out to find a group of committed friends that together would meet up weekly at Luxol grounds to play against other teams. Slowly and gradually friends from the team dropped out to be replaced by other committed individuals.

By October 2002, the team started participating in one day tournaments.  Good results and rankings were achieved in most tournaments.

The team did not have an official name until in October 2003.  Having to register the team for a tournament the name of Babylonia was given. The tournament was won and it was subsequently decided

unanimously to keep the name. The team was called Babylonia because we soon realised that all the players sided with different international football clubs.  The uniting force between all the players was the great passion and dedication towards the game of football.  All were football enthusiasts, committed at performing at their best when it comes to playing.

In the spring of 2004, the team discussed the possibility of participating in the official MFA Futsal League and in the following September the 12-player team was registered for the Third Division League. With this objective in mind, a committee was formed with Stephen Briffa as President, James Aquilina as Secretary and Malcolm Bondin as Treasurer.  The committee decided to change training grounds from Luxol to Melita (Pembroke) the pitch was considered more adequate for Futsal training.

During the Season 2004/5 the team successfully placed second within the section and was promoted to Second Division. A successful group had held on together for two years. The results brought about were a reflection of a consolidated team. Promotion meant playing indoor, a different environment from the one the team was used to.  Subsequently the indoor ground at Corradino was booked for weekly training. Getting used to the new floor and a low bounce ball was a tougher challenge than expected.Unfortunately during the first round of the season, three players had to quit the team – one due to family matters; one due to work abroad; and another signed up with Gharghur FC.  These events were a tough blow to the team spirit; however two new players were registered with team. These new circumstances proved to be hard obstacles which nonetheless were overcome.  Babylonia successfully remained in Second Division.

During the season 2006/7, the club managed to secure two sponsors (Pentagon Properties Ltd and MZ Investments Ltd) who greatly assisted with the financial burden of the club. Also a dedicated ex futsal player, Kevin Mifsud, was recruited as the team's coach. Even though it was going to be his first coaching experience, the committee believed in his potential and gave him the opportunity to prove himself. A number of new players were signed up as well in order to strenghten the team to fight for the promotion to the First Division. Unfortunately the team had a very slow start to the season, probably due to the fact that the new team still needed to get to know itself properly. However a strong second round pushed the team to the top positions of the league standings and the promotion was only missed by two points.

The committee believed that a more professional approach would render the achievement of our new objective – consolidating what we have built till now and continue improving with the aim of ranking within the first three teams of our section with the ambition of getting promoted to the first division as soon as possible. This aim was reached in full in the 2007/8 season when the team arrived in first place in the group division, thus obtaining automatic promotion to the first division.

Pentagon Babylonia Fitsal Club continued aiming at improvement  with its winning mentality and aimed to achieve the best possible results in the top flight. It also became a model in team organisization, discipline  and decication which brought admiration from many including the National Team Coach himself who regularly organised friendlies of the national team against our team and often offered us help and adviised. The committee introduced new players to the team in order to further consolidate the position in the first division.

After placing 4th in its first year in the First Division in the season 2008/2009, Pentagon Properties B.F.C. changed its coach and more than half of its players for the season 2009/2010. As part of its pre-season the club was invited to particpate in a Futsal tournament in Sicily and although it played against professional Serie A futsal teams, it still managed to draw one of the matches and lose another one by just one goal. This pre-season tournament helped in the amalgamation of the players and despite further changes in the players, the team managed to place 5th and reach the semi-finals of the Knockout. The club is busy preparing for the next season in order to continue improving and strengthening the squad.
